Spring compressor

A tool used to restrain coil springs for safe removal and installation. They are available in a variety of shapes, as manual or hydraulic designs; the most common type consists of two steel jaws running on a threaded screw which securely hook into the coil spring; turning a nut reduces the distance between the jaws and compresses the spring. This type of spring compressor is always used in pairs, e.g., to remove MacPherson strut springs. See coil spring compressor, valve spring compressor
